transmission identifier information

Part number:
transinfo
Description:
A swingarm transmission has ONE boot on each axle.
An IRS trans has TWO boots on each axle.

The following BUS TRANSMISSION INFORMATION is taken from a Hot VW's magazine article from August 2002, on pg 80.

The 1969 to 1970 002 gearbox can be identified by 3 ribs on top and an early style 'swinging' throw-out bearing.

The 1971 002 box is a 1 year only unit with the later style 'sliding' throw-out bearing the uses a guide sleeve.
It has no top mounts.

The 72 to 74 bus box can be identified by it's 3 ribs on top & 2 mounting bosses on top of the bellhousing.

1975 was the last year for the 002 bus trans, sometimes referred to as the 'pyramid'.
It can be identified by the 5 ribs on top and 2 top mounts.

1976 was the first year for the 091 trans, the strongest of the type 2 gearboxes.
It can be identified by the 6 top ribs and 2 top mounts.

Want to KNOW if your bus transmission has an 002 or an 091 bell housing?
Measure from the starter mount 'face' to the starter bushing.
If the distance from where the starter mounts onto the transmission to the starter bushing is 2": you need to use the 002 / beetle / Mendeola style starter.
If the distance from where the starter mounts onto the transmission to the starter bushing is 2 1/2": you need to use the bus 091 style starter.
Transmission builders sometimes put the 002 style bell housing on an 091 transmission because the starter is cheaper in cost.
Measure your transmission BEFORE you order the starter.
