Break-In Your Turnkey Engine - what it will cost you to start
Part number:
BITE
Your cost:
$600.00
Description:
You have an engine you bought from somewhere and you want to know it runs right before you put it in your car?
You just bought an engine that's newly built and you want to have it broke in for you before you put it into your car?
I just built your engine and you want to have it broke in for you before you put it into your car?
I'll use multiple gallons of fuel and oil (Shell Rotella 15-4 high in Zinc for break-in)
Bring your engine and $300 deposit.
I'll put the engine on our test bench.
For the process to begin, I prepare the engine to fire, static time for starting, fill the carb(s) with fuel & check for leaks, check oil level & for leaks and cold cranking oil pressure, then start the engine.
I bring the engine to 1600-1700 rpm and hold it there while I check for bad sounds (with a stethoscope) and leaks.
This process is generally enough to burnish in the lifters to the cam and seat the rings to the cylinders and discover leaks.
At the end of the 1/2 hour I set the low end timing, jetting (when necessary), idle speed & note the idle speed oil pressure.
I then drain the run in oil, remove the oil filler & valve covers to cool the engine, set the valves again when the engine is cold & replace the drain assembly after cleaning it.
I then refill the engine with new oil to complete the break-in.
For the 2nd run in I take the engine through its rev range (5,000 to 8,000 rpm depending) and adjust the high end jetting (when necessary), check the full advance of the distributor & note the high end rev oil pressure.
After that is done, I shut the engine off and let it cool for a few minutes and then restart it to see if any additional fuel is needed for a quick start, without having given it any throttle movement.
Now I'm done. This process as described CAN take as long as 6 hours or as little as 3, depending on the engine, problems found or jetting issues.
The $600 is for our labor
Any parts or supplies needed is extra.
Any repairs or corrections to what I HAVEN'T BUILT, (needed to start or finish the break-in process) is extra @ $150 per hour or part there of.
If you bring me an engine I didn't build and you want it broken in,know this:
If your engine was built correctly, when I'm done with the break-in process, you'll be able to drive the engine as you see fit.
